A. All students are required to take a minimum of six (6) full credit courses each year. (6 ½ sophomore & senior year)
B. All students are expected to complete their program of studies each year. Ordinarily, a failure in any subject must be made up during the summer either at an approved summer school or with an approved tutor. The school requires an examination in the made-up course before granting credit for the course. If it is not possible to find an approved summer school offering the required course and a tutor is not available, the student has the responsibility to consult with the Principal about other arrangements to rectify the deficiency.

D. An minimum average of D- or 0.75 is required to receive credit for a course. A failure in the first semester may be redeemed by a grade of C- or better for the second semester. A high first semester average, however, cannot compensate for a second semester failure. Any course failed second semester is a failure for the year. Any course failed for the year may be made up in an approved summer school; the summer school passing grade is 70. Successful completion of summer school enables a student to receive credit for a failed course. It does not change the grade of F.
E. All members of the senior class must successfully complete their Community Service Projects during the month of May in senior year.
F. Each member of the freshman and sophomore classes is required to make a “Day of Retreat” each year; likewise, each member of the junior and senior classes is required to make a full-day retreat. The retreat day will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will conclude at about 2:30 p.m. Some upper class retreats may be overnight. These programs are conducted by the Campus Minister and the Theology Department. All students are required to complete these days of recollection and retreat.
G. Non-Catholic students may complete a program in their own Church if approved by the Principal beforehand. Such a program should be academic in nature, and a grade should be given on completion. Cheverus will accept an approved program for credit.
H. Only in exceptional situations may a student take a course for credit at an accredited institution such as the University of Southern Maine, with the approval of the principal. Tutorials will not be accepted for credit.
I. As a requirement for graduation, it is expected that each student must uphold the values of Cheverus High School as expressed in the purposes and objectives of Cheverus High School (cf. Pgs. 2&3 of this handbook) by being good citizens both in and outside of school. Failure to do so may result in prevention from participating in the ceremony of Graduation. Public disorder or behavior involving Police action may also result in prevention from participating in the ceremony of Graduation.
J. Final class standing for seniors is based on academic performance through eight (8) complete semesters.
