Mission & Introduction
The mission of the Guidance Department at Cheverus High
School is to assist and encourage all students in making appropriate decisions to
reach their personal best and to implement a comprehensive program which will
aid students in becoming “people for others” and socially responsible members
of their school and local communities.
We work to carry out our mission by offering a
comprehensive Guidance program to students in grades 9-12. The program includes counseling services for
students, as well as, consulting, coordinating and collaborating with all
members of the Cheverus community. Students
are assigned a counselor by grade level.
Students will remain with their counselor through graduation from Cheverus
High School. Appointments may be
scheduled during a student’s free period or at lunch by seeing the Guidance
Assistant or the counselor directly.
Parents/Guardians are also invited to consult with a counselor
concerning their son or daughter by making an appointment to insure that the
appropriate amount of time is allotted to discuss the issue and formulate a
plan to address it.
COUNSELING SERVICES
The Guidance program provides academic advising and
individual support services to all students at Cheverus High School. Individual counseling seeks to accommodate
personal (assistance with school, home or social concerns), career, college
advising, academic performance (both support and planning), and referral needs. An important
component of counseling services is confidentiality. Counselors are professionally obligated to
maintain the confidentiality of their relationship with students. Information that a student has shared within
the context of the counseling relationship, unless such disclosures are necessary
to protect the student from harm to self or others, is confidential and not to
be disclosed to others; including parents, other students, faculty or
administration.
CONSULTING SERVICES
Counselors frequently consult with parents, faculty and
administrators in the best interest of the students. While the nature of the counseling
relationship is confidential, consultation usually involves sharing and
gathering information and fact finding, so as to insure the student’s academic
and personal success.
COORDINATING
SERVICES
The Guidance Department coordinates many activities at
Cheverus High School throughout the school year for students in grades
9-12. Orientation, course registration,
scheduling and grading processes are managed through the department. Report cards, progress reports and
transcripts are generated and distributed through the Guidance Office. As part of a comprehensive 9-12 curriculum,
the Guidance Department offers group guidance instruction in a classroom
setting on age appropriate topics. In
conjunction with the College Advising Office, the Guidance Department co-hosts
various events throughout the school year for students and parents, such as the
PSAT informational night and the college fair in May. In addition, the
department brings representatives from over sixty colleges to Cheverus High
School to meet with interested students for information sessions and college
interviews.
COLLABORATING
SERVICES
The Guidance Counselors are members of a team of caring
professionals at Cheverus High School.
Counselors collaborate with parents, teachers, various state and local agencies,
scholarship programs, and sending schools.
The Guidance Counselors work closely with the Instructional Support
teachers to ensure appropriate placements and continued service in the program.
