A Message from the Office of Alumni     Affairs

May 8, 2008

Throughout the year at almost all of our alumni functions, someone will ask me, "What can I do to strengthen my ties to Cheverus and its alumni?"
followed by “Which doesn’t involve giving money?”

At the beginning of the year, I might not have been able to give you a concrete response to those questions…and some may not want me to publish here any response that doesn’t involve giving money.  However, now after eight months on the job, I have constructed a top five, yes, a top five list of what Cheverus alums can do to strengthen and support the alumni program:

  1. Become involved with newly formed Alumni Association (the first official meeting of which will take place Homecoming Weekend).
  2. Be a proud ambassador of Cheverus High School by supporting the school’s extra-curricular activities (come to a game, attend concerts or plays, etc.).
  3. Volunteer for on-campus events like the auction.Take part in your class reunion.  Help with its organization or just by communicating with fellow alumni about the event.
  4. Come to and enjoy our many social functions, award ceremonies, or campus fundraisers.

I know the second question is “that doesn’t involve money,” but for those of you who cannot commit the time to social events or other school/alumni gatherings, here is a quick list of ways you can help out financially:

  1. Give to our Annual Challenge Drive. It goes right back to our students.
  2. Adopt a student under our Adopt A Student program and pay for a student’s tuition for one, two, three or all four years.
  3. Even if you can’t make a class reunion, please inquire about the class gift--and then donate to it.
  4. Help sponsor a specific alumni award ceremony. You can do this on your own or through your company.
I will end this month’s letter with a brief campus update:

The seniors have completed their final exams and are now performing their month-long community service projects. This is another great example of how Cheverus focuses on the whole person. The academics are just a part of the educational experience. The service learning is the culmination of the entire Cheverus experience.  From the beginning of the Arrupe Service Project to wherever they end up in their lives, they will always remember their service learning experience.

As always, please contact me in the Alumni Office with any questions or thoughts.  My number is 774-6238 x-44.  Or, come by for a campus tour.  My door is always open.

Best regards,

Michael St. John
Director of Alumni Affairs
