Cheverus High School MAGIS AWARD

Cheverus stands for much more than academic achievement, sports and extracurricular activities.  It follows the Jesuit tradition which calls for the pursuit of excellence for the purpose of more fully becoming “people for others.” When Jesuits and those familiar with the Ignatian tradition identify this pursuit of excellence, they use the word Magis, the Latin word meaning literally “more”.  The the word "magis" is used to dramatize the Ignatian attitude that one can always do more to serve others and God.

Each year Cheverus recognizes those in its family who live according to the imperative represented by the word Magis.  The Magis Awards honor those who have achieved excellence as “people for others.”  The award winners might be priests, teachers, or volunteers with the sick or poor or might have spent their entire lives with the needy in a foreign country. They might be counselors, nurses, or doctors, or they might also be business owners who recognize the dignity of their employees, lawyers who defend the powerless, or philanthropists who give their fortunes to the needy and helpless. Regardless of what careers they have chosen, their lives must demonstrate that they have been “people for others” at the highest level.

We honor the Magis Award winners at a banquet in at the turn of the new year.  A reception, dinner and the awards ceremony take place where the honorees each receive a plaque.

In order for the Magis Awards to be successful, alumni need to participate in the nomination process. There are many in the Cheverus family who deserve such an award but unless someone takes the time to fill out the nomination form, those worthy individual will go unrecognized.  The deadline for nominations is October of each year.  Anyone may nominate a person for the Magis Award, but the nominee must be affiliated with Cheverus either as a graduate, a current or former staff member, or a former member of the Board of Trustees.
