Magis Awards Ceremony ~ 2006
Cheverus honored the winners of the third annual Magis Award at a banquet on January 7, 2007 at the Portland Regency Hotel in Portland, Maine. Friends and family of the honorees, staff, students and faculty attended this wonderful event which honored members of the Cheverus community who have achieved excellence as “people for others.”
From left to right: Robert S. Nanovic, Timothy E. Burton, Francis E. Myatt and Richard M. Charette.
The reception and banquet were held in rooms still beautifully decorated for the holiday season. Garlands, floral arrangements and lighting enhanced the atmosphere. Several members of the Cheverus Board of Trustees were in attendance and, again this year, there was a table of students invited who were some of the student population's most active people-for-others-in-training: Andrew Weidler '07, Emily Lambert '08 and Marcus Cardona '09 from the Key Club and Alex Kotch '07 from the Haiti Solidarity Club. What an example this year's Award recipients were for them!
Following the reception and a sumptuous buffet dinner, Father Ronald J. Amiot, S.J. opened the award ceremony with a blessing. Bill Burke, Academic Vice Principal, took over and did a masterful job of running the program, introducing presenters and honorees. The presenters each spent a few minutes speaking warmly of the honorees: Joe Loughlin, Deputy Chief of Police, Operations Bureau, introduced Portland Police Chief Tim Burton; long-time business partner, Roy Clark, told us of his many years collaboration with Rick Charette; brother Gerry Myatt introduced Frank Myatt; and Bob Nanovic was introduced by his lifelong friend Tim McManus.
Fr. Ron Amiot presents the Magis Award to each recipient.
The honorees each spoke for a short period--some spoke of their time at Cheverus, some of events in their lives and some of their families and their commitment to giving. Apparent in the opening remarks of each presenter and these speeches that followed was a reverence for the Jesuit ideal of the pursuit of excellence for the purpose of more fully becoming "people for others." It was a moving event for all in attendance.
Each honoree received a plaque with a symbol of a flame suggesting the gift of the Holy Spirit. A similar plaque will be permanently on display at Cheverus High School.
