ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT POLICIES

Sports Seasons

It is the responsibility of the Athletic Department to offer a well-balanced program of athletic activities. To prevent overlapping of seasons and excessive specialization and demands on student/athletes, the M.P.A. and the S.M.A.A. have assigned each sport a clearly defined sports season. This is to allow a student to go from one sport season to another without conflicts and, when possible, provide rest between seasons. A Sports Season is that period of time beginning with the first day of organized practice and ending on the day of the last regularly scheduled game or tournament activity. Each sport will have a pre-season training period approved by the M.P.A. and the Southern Maine Activities Association.

Loss of School Time for Student-Athletes

Loss of school time disrupts instruction and takes time away form the student’ academic education. Accordingly, lost time will be kept to a minimum. Coaches, in consultation with the Director of Athletics, should schedule practices, scrimmages, and competitions at times that will not interfere with the athlete’s academic classes. Some conflicts, however, may be unavoidable.

Attendance and Abuse Issues

Regular attendance is expected of ALL athletes. A healthy athlete and should have a good attendance record and should never cut classes or school. If an athlete is absent from school the day of an athletic activity (contest or practice) he or she shall not participate in that day’s activity. The Assistant Principal reserves the right to review all absences and allow the student athlete to participate if there is, in the administrator’s judgment, a valid reason for the absence. Excused absences, made in advance through the Assistant Principal, are permitted.

Attendance at all games and practices is mandatory unless excused by the coach before the competition or practice. Missing a practice or game without good reason will be dealt with severely. Sudden illness or some other emergency would be good reason for missing a practice or a game.

The Assistant Principal must clear tardiness to or dismissal from school before the student will be allowed to participate. Student athletes must be in attendance for at least half of the school day to receive permission to participate from the Assistant Principal. When an individual is absent from school because of illness, he must be in school at least 4 periods to participate in events or practice. Failure to do so will result in denial of participation. Tardiness following evening activities or morning practices will be closely reviewed by the school administration and appropriate action will be taken to prevent future tardiness.

Athletes who are absent from school the day before a non-school day activity, may not participate in the activity unless the absence is excused in writing by the parents or guardian and approved by a coach. The Assistant Principal can be consulted in all matters of attendance and discipline and may veto Athletic Department decisions.

Purple and Gold Club

The Purple and Gold Club is organized to assist Cheverus in providing funds for all Cheverus Activities. Without the financial support generated by the Purple and Gold Club in the past, our activities would not be what they are now. The Purple and Club, if it is to continue to provide the amount of support presently needed, needs the help of all parents. Please join the Purple and Gold Club and become active members in this important organization. Each Cheverus Activity shall have a Purple and Gold parent liaison to facilitate parental/family communication and fund raising activities.
