ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT POLICIES
Student-Athlete Eligibility
All students who wish to participate in interscholastic activities are required to abide by the rules of both the Maine Principals’ Association and the Cheverus High School. Please review the MPA Eligibility Checklist in the Appendix. All Student-Athletes must be cleared to play by Cheverus High School before participating in practice or competition. There shall be no exceptions to this policy.
Academic Eligibility Requirements:
Academic eligibility shall be determined by the Principal’s Office. In general, to be eligible to participate in interscholastic athletics, a student must carry six subjects at all times and demonstrate satisfactory progress towards completion of his course of study. If a student fails two or more subjects in a quarter, he or she shall be ineligible to participate in any extracurricular activity during the entire following quarter. Also, if a student receives three or more unsatisfactory marks (“U”s) in a quarter, he or she shall be ineligible to participate during the entire following quarter.
If a student is placed on academic suspension or behavioral suspension, he or she shall not represent the school in any interscholastic contest nor shall he or she practice for any competition prior to the suspension being resolved. Athletic suspensions may exceed the length of school suspensions.
For more information concerning general eligibility standards, please consult the Cheverus Student Handbook.
Athletic Clearance Forms: Each student will be issued a packet of forms that must be taken home and signed by the student, doctor and parent or legal guardian. Once the forms are filled out completely, they must be returned to the Director of Athletics who will give the head/varsity coach a list of players who are cleared to practice and play.
Physical Examinations:
All participants in interscholastic sports must provide evidence of a medical examination (pre-participation physical) that certifies that the athlete is physically capable of participating in athletic activities. Please note that the school does not provide funds for pre-participation examinations; this is the family’s or participant’s responsibility.
Pre-participation examinations (PPE) are valid for two years. A complete pre-participation examination shall be done when the athlete enters our competitive sports program, and in most instances this is in the 9th grade. The history portion of the PPE should be completed by the athlete and signed by his/her parent or guardian.
The PPE can be done by a medical doctor, doctor of osteopathy, nurse practitioner, or a physicians assistant. Students are encouraged to utilize the Orthopedic Associations Pre-participation physical exam that is offered to Cheverus students in August.
Athletes who sustained notable injuries or have medical illnesses during the interim period; i.e. the time that elapses between the two PPE, will be recycled into the PPE program at the discretion of the athletic trainer or wellness coordinator at any time or grade level.
Transfers:
A student who transfers enrollment to Cheverus with or without a corresponding change of residence by his/her parents(s) or legal guardian(s) shall not practice or play until the MPA transfer waiver approval process is complete. Transfer students shall also meet all the student eligibility requirements of the Maine Principals’ Association and Cheverus prior to participation.
Age Limitation:
If a student enrolled in high school turns 19 years of age before August 1 of a given year, the student shall be ineligible to compete in the interscholastic athletic program.
