ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT POLICIES

Insurance

Cheverus insures athletes on a very limited basis. The insurance coverage provided has very specific limits and is not designed as basic health insurance, but rather as a companion plan to the athlete’s personal insurance and as limited coverage if the athlete has no personal insurance. The athletic trainer shall process all insurance claims.

Dropping or Transferring from a Team

In rare instances, an athlete may find it necessary to drop a sport for a good reason. If this is the case, the following procedure must be followed:

  • The student must talk with his or her coach and head coach.
  • The student and coaches must report the situation to the Athletic Director.
  • The student must return in all equipment issued.

Athletes will be allowed to leave any team they try out for during the first two weeks of the season. After this time, if an athlete quits for other than medical reasons, he or she will not be allowed to compete in another activity for the remainder of the sports season, unless properly cleared by the coach and Director of Athletics. Athletes may switch teams in pre-season, until one week prior to the earliest event of either sport, with the permission of the coaches involved and the Director of Athletics.

Those individuals finally selected as squad members of any athletic team shall be considered as members of the team through the competition of that regular sport season unless they are removed for disciplinary reasons, scholastic ineligibility, or mutual agreement between player and coach. Coaches have the responsibility for the selection of specific squad members for tournament competition and at that time may release those members of the squad not involved in the tournament series, if they (the coaches) so desire. All squad members who complete the season shall be invited to participate in the athletic awards ceremonies regardless of whether they are or are not award recipients.

    Managers

The team manager is a team member and must abide by the same rules and regulations as all student-athletes.

    Equipment

All equipment and uniforms belong to the school, unless the student has purchased the item. Students may not keep or give away any item that has been purchased by Cheverus High School. Students may not use any school equipment for other teams or organization s for any reason at any time. Cheverus athletic equipment is to be used only by Cheverus students in sponsored activities. All equipment must be accounted for at all times.

Student-athletes are responsible for all school equipment that they receive. The student-athlete is expected to keep equipment clean and in good condition and to wear it properly at all times. All equipment in all sports shall be inspected on a regular basis by the coach and the players and managers under the coach’s direct supervision. Players have the responsibility to report any equipment deficiencies immediately to their coach. No participant shall practice or play with defective equipment under any circumstances.

Student-athletes accounts will be charged for all lost equipment. In order to participate in a new sports season, all existing equipment charges must be paid in full.
