ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT POLICIES

Travel to and from Practice Facilities

Cheverus does not have onsite facilities to accommodate the practice demands of all of our interscholastic programs. Accordingly, certain teams will practice at facilities that are located off campus. These facilities include, but are not limited to the following sites: Payson Park, UNE (Westbrook College) SMCC, PIA, Howard Sports, YMCA, Riverton School, Portland Country Club, Nonesuch CC, Riverside GC, USM (Portland & Gorham), Falmouth Family Ice, Portland Sports Complex, Washington Avenue Complex, Davin Pool (Westbrook), Cumberland County Civic Center and Baxter Boulevard.

PLEASE NOTE: SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION IS NOT AVAILABLE TO TRANSPORT STUDENT ATHLETES TO PRACTICE FACILITIES OFFSITE. AS A CONDITION OF PARTICIPATION IN THOSE PROGRAMS, AFFECTED STUDENT ATHLETES AND THEIR PARENTS OR LEAGL GUARDIANS MUST AGREE TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR TRANSPORTATION FROM CHEVERUS HIGH SCHOOL TO THE PRACTICE FACILITIES AND TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF STUDENT ATHLETES TRAVELING FROM CHEVERUS TO AN OFFSITE PRACTICE FACILITY. CHEVERUS PERSONNEL ARE NOT AVAILABLE TO SUPERVISE STUDENT ATHLETES DURING THIS TRANSITION.

Transportation
(also see bus and van guidelines in appendix)

Whenever possible, athletes shall travel to and from all away athletic contests in transportation provided by the athletic department. Athletes will remain with their squad under the supervision of a coach when attending away contests. All school bus and van rules remain in effect for athletic travel, including but not limited to rules regarding food, noise, remaining in seats, and the care and respect for equipment.

Exception: Athletes may return from athletic events with their parents with the permission of the particular coach. Written parental permission must be submitted to the coach prior to the event. The Athletic Director will handle extenuating circumstances. Parents should contact the Athletic Director well in advance of the event if there are any questions.

The use of privately owned automobiles to transport athletes is not recommended. At no time should a student drive more than the normal commuting distance he/she is allowed to drive by his/her parents.

Attire and Appearance

Athletic teams represent our school and community. In order to project a good image of both, athletes and team personnel must be well groomed and neat in appearance. It is expected that all uniforms will be properly worn and clean.

When a team travels and changes at the opponent’s site, they shall conform to the school’s daytime dress code as set forth in the Cheverus High School Handbook. Coaches may opt to have their team travel in the team’s appropriate uniform. Coaches may refuse to take an athlete to any contest if his or her appearance violates this policy.
