ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT POLICIES

Athletic Trainer Coverage

The Director of Athletics shall determine the athletic trainer’s contest and practice coverage schedule in consultation with the athletic trainer, league rules, and coaching staff. Coaches, parents and student-athletes must alert the Director of Athletics to any individual situation that may require changes to the coverage schedule.

Guidelines for an Athlete’s Return to Play After an Injury/Illness

If a student athlete is injured or has other medical circumstances that may affect his or her participation in an extra-curricular athletic activity and that student has not been seen a physician, he or she must be cleared by the Cheverus High School athletic trainer and/or the consulting team physician in order to return to play.

If a physician has treated the student-athlete, the athlete must have a signed note (documentation) from the physician stating that the athlete has been evaluated and that the athlete is allowed to return to play. The note must stipulate the day the athlete may return to normal athletic activity and any restrictions imposed on the athletes activities. The note should be dated no sooner than one day prior to the return to activity play date.

Head and Neck Injuries

An athletes return to play after a head/neck/concussion injury will follow the guidelines set by the American College of Sports Medicine (attached). A physician must evaluate an athlete who has sustained a head and or neck injury before the athlete will be allowed to return to play. The student-athlete will not be allowed to return to play without documentation from a physician stating that the athlete may resume activity. The note must stipulate the day the athlete can return to activity, any restrictions prescribed and be dated no sooner than one day prior to the return to activity.

Player Ejection

If a player is ejected from a game or, if for any other reason he or she must leave the field of play, the player must be accompanied by an adult and taken to a designated area for the duration of the contest. The coach and player must report the incident in writing to the Athletic Director within 24 hours.
