APPENDIX B
Guidelines for Choosing Student-Athletes for Athletic Teams
General Statement
Cheverus High School offers 15 sports and 44 teams. In the sports of Football, Cross Country, Swimming, Diving, Indoor Track, Outdoor Track, Field Hockey student-athletes are not eliminated based on specific numbers of participants or ability. This means that all who try out can join those teams provided there are no health or safety restrictions preventing participation. Please note that this does not mean that student-athletes have a right to be on these teams. Membership on all teams is a privilege and all student-athletes must follow general training rules and specific rules for that sport prescribed by the coaching staff.
In the sports of Golf, Tennis, Soccer, Basketball, Ice Hockey, Baseball/Softball, Skiing, and Lacrosse student-athletes may be eliminated or denied the privilege of participation at a varsity and/or subvarsity level because the sport prescribes a specific number that may participate. The number in each sport is prescribed by the coach of that team, with the help of head coach and the athletic director, based on many criteria. Some of the criteria that determine the size of the team may include:
- Talent and work ethic of those trying out.
- Number of individuals trying out.
- Optimum number determined by coach to conduct productive practices and insure adequate substitutes.
- Academic eligibility of those trying out. To be eligible a student-athlete must pass the equivalent of 4 units in the grading period preceding the beginning of that season.
The following are minimum guidelines for coaches to follow when eliminating (cutting) student-athletes from specific teams.
- Coaches will provide in writing before the first day of tryouts a list of criteria on which student-athletes will be judged, e.g. student-athlete "must have a vertical jump of at least 16 inches” or “be able to make lay ups with either hand.”
- Tryouts last at least 3 full practice sessions and the student-athlete will be informed on the length of that tryout period in advance.
- Coaches do not use cut lists. Student-athletes are told, by the coach and with as much empathy as possible, the reasons why he or she was eliminated. If large numbers are involved, a group meeting may be coordinated and approved in advance by the Athletic Director.
Our coaches realize that as difficult as this process is on them, it is much more difficult on the student-athletes. We make every attempt to use this opportunity to let student-athletes know that we understand their disappointment, that this is not a personal decision, and that we support their efforts to try out again them in the future if they so choose. We ask our coaches to imagine themselves in the place of the student-athletes when preparing to talk with student-athletes and to consider involving parents in the process when appropriate to do so.
