APPENDIX D

Mutual and Self-Respect Policy Statement

PREAMBLE:

In the world in which we live there are too many examples of disrespect for self and for others. The use and abuse of power, prestige, drugs, including alcohol, sex and violence by adults as well as young people are the all too present indications of disrespect for oneself as well as disrespect for others.

As a Jesuit high school, Cheverus has as one of its goals, to foster respect for oneself and respect for all other persons of every religion, race, gender, age, ethnic origin, social economic background and lifestyle. Any violent, racial, sexual, physical or emotional abuse (including teasing) by anyone in the Cheverus community will receive zero tolerance and when reported will be dealt with as swiftly as possible.

In Webster’s dictionary the word: respect, is defined as follows: to consider worthy of esteem; hence, to refrain from intruding upon, as a person’s privacy. The definition of respect is further understood by recognizing that a loving God has revealed to people a way to live one’s personal life and an appropriate manner in which to interact with others in a loving and responsible way as creatures of this loving God.

From the above understanding follow behavior patterns that are acceptable and fostered by the entire Cheverus community. These behavior patterns are outlined in the faculty and student handbooks. The knowledge and implementation of this behavior is expected for each member of the Cheverus community: student, parent, staff person, faculty, coach, administrator, and Board member.

  1. In the unlikely event that any member of the Cheverus community experiences any religious, racial, sexual, physical or emotional discomfort or harassment from a student, parent, faculty member, coach, staff member, administrator, campus visitor or anyone else in word or action whether on the Cheverus campus or not, the discomfort needs to be reported to an administrator, faculty member, guidance person, coach or staff person immediately. Once known or reported the adult member of the Cheverus community then has the responsibility to report the incident of the proper administrator so that appropriate action may be taken. There will be no negative reprisals taken toward anyone who knows of and reports such behavior.
  2. In addition to the adults on campus there are two additional people who may be contracted for advice with respect to the proper way to proceed:
    • Mr. Peter F. Donnelly, Psy. D, Associate Director of clinical service for the Spurwink School, 899 Riverside Street, Portland, MAINE 04103 (Tel. 871-1200, fax: 871-1232)
    • Mr. John Brennan, Deacon, Saint Bartholomew’s Parish, Cape Elizabeth, MAINE (Tel: 799-6697) or Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Windham, MAINE (Tel: 892-8288) or 893-2848 (home in Windham).
