Beyond the Classroom....

The education of a young person does not end at the sounding of the final bell.  In pursuit of this ideal, Cheverus encourages all students to partake in co-curricular activities. Whether one's interests lie in mathematics, computers, hiking, drama, publishing, civil rights or throwing the discus, Cheverus provides the forum for that exploration.

Sporting meticulously maintained baseball and softball diamonds and a complete track-soccer-football stadium complex that abuts Baxter Boulevard on Back Cove, the Cheverus campus has been heralded as one of the most spectacular of any high school in Maine. Completion of the the Washington Avenue project has added other softball, baseball and soccer fields, and six tennis courts to the Cheverus sporting facilities. A new gymnasium with an indoor track and training facilities was completed in August of 2005. (See the Athletics section for a full list of teams and schedules.)

Off campus, the presence of Cheverus students is felt throughout the community.  Key Club members spend the Thanksgiving season delivering turkey dinners to over 500 needy families in Portland.  For the month of May, Cheverus seniors work alongside teachers, day care providers, clinicians and other service providers to further their education as “a person for others.”  The number of agencies that clamor for Cheverus seniors during our “May Projects” has grown to over 50.  Although the value of our students’ volunteer time in the community through the years has been estimated at over $2 million, it is difficult to ascertain which party benefits more.
