![]() A great time was had by all! Balls were flying all over the place, spirits were high and there were a lot of laughs. Early arrivals were greeted by the smiling faces of the Boys Basketball Team who took care of putting everyone's clubs on the carts. After that, it was registration, a touch of breakfast, an inspiring Mass held by Father Keegan and a "Goody" bag handed out by Jason Turner ('92). Nice touch! -- a monogrammed golf shirt, a sleeve of balls, some tees and more. Next came the "Team Picture" which can be found, along with individual shots of the entire group, by clicking on to the Photo Gallery link. After detailed instructions by the Pro, we scattered onto the Sable Oaks Golf course in South Portland, one of the finest in the state. During the rounds everyone was treated to drinks and snacks as the refreshment carts, capably driven by our volunteers, continually skirted the course. It was wet, but thankfully the rain held off until we were safely under the tent with steaks and barbequed chicken piled high on our plates. The golf was both entertaining and excellent and there were a couple of close calls for the Hole-in-One contests, but no one was able to drive away in a new car. A score of 16 under -- 56 -- by the Honan team (made up of Dan Honan ('78), Gene Fitzpatrick, Oakley Jones and Jonathan Brogan ('78) captured 1st Gross. 1st Net went to the Munis 2 team of Mark Garrepy, Mark Poitras, Steve Hersey, and Stephen King with a score of 61. All the scores can be found on the Leader Board link. Prizes were awarded to the following:
Although friendships, getting together with classmates, and general Cheverian camaraderie are all a part of the Golf Classic, the bigger picture is to raise funds for Endowment/Scholarships. This year's Classic, through the generosity of all those who participated, will bring in approximately $8,000. That's the good news! The bad news however is that although this is our projected revenue, collecting Sponsorship fees isn't all that easy. I am sure that everyone is well intended, but right now we are far from reaching our goal because of this. If any of you Sponsors are reading this and haven't sent in your check yet, we would appreciate it as we have expenses that have to be paid. Jason Turner will be sending out another batch of invoices this week. Please be assured that we appreciate your continued support without which this fundraiser could not be a success. (Check the Sponsor's Link.) For those of you who signed up but were unable to attend we were sorry to have missed you. One of the unfortunate aspects of your absence was that we had about $75 per individual in fixed expenses that we were still obligated to pay. If you would like to make a contribution to help defray these costs, please contact Bob Brown in the Alumni Office or Jason Turner in the Development Office here at Cheverus High School (774-6238). We would be glad to send along one of this years Golf shirts. Regardless, we hope you can make next years event. Thanks again to all the participants and we look forward to seeing you next fall at the 22nd Annual Golf Classic. Bob Brown Back to 2003 Golf Classic Home Page Back to Cheverus Page |
