The mission of Cheverus High School, an inclusive Jesuit Catholic college preparatory school, is to prepare young men and women to be people for others by fostering intellectual, spiritual, physical and personal excellence.

|
Cheverus High School is a private co-educational college preparatory secondary school conducted by the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. Built in 1917 as a Diocesan school, Cheverus welcomed the service of the Jesuits in 1942. Beginning with the 2000-2001 school year Cheverus became a co-educational institution.

Accreditation & Membership
|
Cheverus High School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges as a college preparatory high school and has been acknowledged as such since 1963. Cheverus is a member of the Jesuit Secondary Education Association, Independent Schools Association of Northern New England, New England Association for College Admission Counseling, and The College Board.

Faculty
|
The Cheverus High School faculty includes 45 instructors. Currently there are 26 men and 19 women who teach at Cheverus. Sixty percent have advanced degrees. There are four administrators, two guidance counselors, one campus minister and one mission formation director.

Admission Requirements
|
Admission is based on previous academic record, teacher recommendations and a formal interview with the Director of Admissions. Cheverus attracts students from 50 communities in southern and central Maine. In the 2007-08 school year, Cheverus will award in excess of $1.25 million in financial aid, assisting 43% of its students.

Service
Requirement
|
A hallmark of Jesuit education is to form “men and women for others,” therefore; seniors are required to complete a community service project in May of their senior year. (120 hours and two 500 word reflection papers)

Academic Program
|
All courses are college preparatory. Honors and Advanced Placement courses are offered as listed below. Enrollment in these courses is determined by faculty recommendation, past performance and GPA.
Honors Courses are offered in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, English I, English II, English III, English IV, Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, Physics, French II, French III, French IV, French V, Latin II, Latin III/IV, Spanish II, Spanish III, Spanish IV and Spanish V.
Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered in 10 subjects: English Literature, Calculus (AB and BC), Statistics, Latin, Spanish, Biology, Environmental Science, United States History, and Economics.
Theology is an integral part of a Cheverus education. During their four years of high school students undertake a rigorous academic study of Christianity, moral issues, scripture and social justice. These courses draw upon many authors and texts including: Plato, Aristotle, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Albert Camus, Dorothy Day, Papal Encyclicals, and the New American Bible. College admissions offices are encouraged to include Theology courses when recalculating grade point averages.

Grading System
|
All credit courses taken in grades 9-12 are included in the cumulative GPA. Letter grades are awarded for all academic courses. An increment of .25 quality points is added for those enrolled in Honors and Advanced Placement courses. The equivalency grades are:
