(Portland, Maine) Cheverus Students Help Boost Blood Supplies
The students at Cheverus High School rolled up their sleeves to donate blood to the American Red Cross. 99 pints of blood were collected from the arms of willing students, parents, faculty and staff, 70 of where were first-time donors, and 44 of that number were 16 year olds.
Every available time slot for the event was filled. Teachers, staff and Cheverus parents joined students to donate and by midmorning the gymnasium was full of people giving blood, waiting their turn, or munching on snacks afterwards.
The blood drive, which was held on Monday, March 8th was organized and sponsored by the National Honor Society at Cheverus. This is the ninth year the drive has been held at the school.
Davis Hartwell, Cheverus teacher and advisor to the National Honor Society said “I was very gratified with the results of the drive. We evened our record take of last year, and we did so under more restrictive Red Cross requirements for donors than in the past. Our students, along with the rest of the Cheverus community, did a great job stepping up to the challenge by volunteering and helping out. We had 70 new donors, 44 of whom were under 17. That's a solid base on which to build next year's effort.”
March is American Red Cross month. The Red Cross says there is currently a critical need for all blood types. If you are interested in donating, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or go to: www.newenglandblood.org/maine/scheduleb.htm
