Arrupe Service Projects -- Senior Community Service
Each year Cheverus seniors complete their education with Community Service during the month of May. Traditionally called "May Projects" this program was re-named the Arrupe Service Projects to honor Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J. This program is an integral part of our mission at Cheverus to nurture young men and women to go forth and serve others.
For the seniors, their academic year ends the last week of April with final exams. Then, they get ready to venture off campus to various agencies and institutes. Each senior is placed in a school, hospital, child care center, elderly care center or special service program that will allow them to practice what they have been taught -- that they all possess a special talent which they should use as a tool to help others.
During this four weeks, each senior will meet once a week with a faculty advisor to discuss his progress and write two three-page reflection papers. This program is not taken lightly: it is a requirement for graduation.
The program begins the first week of May and ends the last Thursday in May. The following day, the seniors return to Cheverus for their final assembly to speak to the underclassmen about their individual growth at their workplace. It is a gratifying and humbling experience for all, with memories that will stay with them the rest of their lives.
