The Glossary of Giving – Gift Options

Sharing your Blessings

When you give a gift to Cheverus you help us provide our students with the quality, value-based education and programs that will positively affect them throughout the remainder of their lives.

There are a variety of ways to support Cheverus High School; each one invaluable to the strength of the school.  We hope you find this reference guide beneficial when considering your support.

Planned Giving - Consider make a gift through your estate or financial plans and you can create a legacy that will ensure future young men and women of Cheverus will benefit from its quality education, programs and traditions.  For more information about planned giving, click here Planned Giving.

Cash - Donors who itemize on their taxes receive a full charitable income tax deductions for cash gifts.

Annual Fund – Each year, gifts are raised from Alumni, Parents, Friends, and Businesses to help meet current operating expenses.  These important annual contributions help to fund student financial aid, academic programs, faculty resources, athletic and extra-curricular activities, and grounds maintenance.  The Annual Fund is the primary vehicle covering the difference between tuition and the increasing cost of running an independent school.

Capital Gifts – Gifts raised from donors for a special purpose, like the current building construction project or endowment growth.

Challenge Drive – The name Cheverus High School gives to its Annual Fund Campaign.

Credit Cards - Donors can make quick and easy gifts to the School through VISA and MasterCard.

Endowment – These gifts are placed in a permanent fund allowing only the earned interest to be spent.  The primary beneficiary of most Cheverus High School endowment income is the school’s financial aid program.  As the endowment grows, so does the strength and accessibility of Cheverus to every qualified student.

Gift Clubs – Cheverus established gift clubs to encourage and honor donors who support the school at their highest level possible.  Membership is open to all Alumni, Parents, Friends, and Businesses.

Gifts in Kind – These donations are not direct monetary contributions; instead they are gifts such as furnishings, art, computers, cars, books, professional services, etc. that can be used at events such as our Annual Auction, Golf Tournament, Hall of Fame Award Ceremony or the Magis Award Dinner.

Gifts of Securities/Stock – Charitable contributions to Cheverus High school are tax-deductible.  However, those individuals who own appreciated stock know that there is an additional benefit to giving stock.  For example, a President’s Circle Gift of $1,000 cash is tax-deductible for a tax savings of $300 or a total investment of only $700 (assuming a 30% tax bracket).  However, if a donor gives $1,000 in stock which has appreciated from an initial purchase price of $500, there is an opportunity to save an additional $140 (28%) in capital gains tax.  Thus, the actual dollars spent on a President’s Circle pledge is $560.  In such a case, it may be time to start thinking about the Cornerstone Society!

Matching Gifts – A number of organizations participate in charitable matching gift programs.  If a Cheverus constituent is affiliated with a company which matches gifts to secondary institutions, a matching gift form should be submitted along with the donor’s contribution.  The company may contribute up to three times the contributed amount in the donor’s name.

Memorial Scholarships – A large percentage of the school’s endowment is comprised of Memorial Gifts.  These scholarships are typically established by individuals who arrange for donations in lieu of flowers or choose to make a family gift on the occasion of the death of a loved one.

Restricted Gifts
– Restricted gifts are given for a specific use and include memorial scholarships, endowment gifts, and gifts that recognize a particular department.

Unrestricted Gifts – Given our need to meet operating costs, those gifts which may be used wherever the need is greatest are vital to Cheverus.  The Cheverus High School Annual Challenge Drive comprises the majority of these annual gifts.
