In the fall of 1969, Cheverus reinstated football after a lack of finances left the school without a team for quite a few years.

Why is this important to our history?

A spread in the 1970 yearbook about the return of football put it best….

“The purpose of a football team? It’s for each man to give it all he’s got, it’s for a player to take his heart, to put it in the pit of his stomach and call it guts. Bust most of all, it’s a pride that 40 students and two coaches, gave to Cheverus. The goal of the football team? To sweat, to win, but most of all, to give the school something to be proud of. The team attained a 6 – 2 record, much better than previously speculated, but what it gave to the school in light of spirit and pride can’t be put in a score book.”

...and there was a “Frosh” team too!

“Freshman Football…What is it? A group of young players aiming at, among other goals, the replacement of graduating varsity players….Yet, it is also a sports unit aspiring and able to make an impact, sports –wise, school spirit-wise, State-wise – on its own merits…”

Coached by Bruce Campbell, the freshman team was undefeated in the 1969 seasons and “Co–Champions” of the Southwestern Maine Freshman League.

Thank you to the players who helped to reinstate a source of spirit and pride at Cheverus!

Since football was reinstated, Cheverus has always been competitive, achieving State Championship Titles in 1985, 2010 and 2011.

We invite players from the 1969 teams to join us in recognizing this important milestone with a ceremony during halftime of the Homecoming Football game.

While we hope you will join your fellow Chevarians for a full day of spirit & pride, (review the schedule here), we ask that anyone who would like to participate in the on-field recognition, let us know by September 27th and plan to arrive to the football section of the alumni tent by 2:45pm on the day of Homecoming, Saturday, October 5, 2019.
