Homecoming -- October 5, 2019
What a day! What a game!
Thank you to all the alumni and friends who came home to Cheverus this past weekend for what was an idyllic Maine fall day. Alumni gathered for Mass in Loyola Chapel and then convened under the Alumni Tent for conversation and good cheer before the big game.
It was an honor to host the 1969 Football team, and mark the 50th anniversary of the triumphant return of football to Cheverus. The '69 team members signed a Stags football jersey, while current Stags signed a gold helmet. At halftime, '69 team member Jack Brennan '70 spoke on behalf of the team.
"St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit Order and the patron saint of education and educators, asserted that the best teaching and learning takes place outside the classroom. I know firsthand the sacrifices parents and families make to promote athletic engagement; however, I agree with St. Ignatius, probably the first teacher/coach, that the triumphs and disappointments of athletics are opportunities that can be and are often the most influential in the molding of a young person's life. The Class of 1970 is most grateful for such an opportunity to play football."
The day was made even sweeter with a Stag victory over the Portland Bulldogs, 28-21. “This game was a sign of maturity and we’re happy about that,” said Stags coach Mike Vance. “Every team matures during the season and we had a lot of room for improvement. The kids have really put it together.”
