Cheverus senior Daniel Haskell has been awarded the prestigious QuestBridge scholarship and will attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME.

This year there were 14,926 QuestBridge applicants nationwide. Haskell is one of just 1,127 Match Scholarship recipients and will receive financial aid for the full cost of tuition, room and board, supplies, and travel expenses. He is only the second Cheverus student to receive this scholarship.

Haskell’s reaction to the news was, “Disbelief for a few minutes. Then relief. Then joy.”

The extensive application process includes ranking up to 12 QuestBridge partner schools. Bowdoin was among his preferred schools because it, “has a clear, influential mission...a great political science program, and it values diversity of perspective and personality.” Moreover, the culture of Bowdoin was very attractive to Haskell, “I wanted purposeful, deliberate, and diverse education, and Bowdoin seems uniquely inclined to such aspects. I also really love Maine.”

Haskell is an exceptional scholar, and he recognized the strong academic preparation he has received at Cheverus. He also pointed to something else that Cheverus has provided, “Cheverus gave me mission. I speak with the utmost sincerity when I say that Jesuit education has made my educational career and its future what it is.” He continued, “Since Freshman year, I have constantly been exposed to Catholic and Jesuit ideals. I have been...given the idea that education is not simply about economic success but about personal development for the sake of the other.”

A member of the Debate Team, focusing on Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Haskell is also a member of Model UN, Student Government, and the Mock Trial Team. Just this year, he started the Stag Argumentation Group for Equity. He is also a member of the Cheverus Drama Society and a playwright. His one-act play Doko Ka will be performed by the Cheverus Drama Society this year. Haskell is the son of Natalie and Dan Haskell ’90, an esteemed and long-standing member of the Theology Department. He is one of seven children and lives in Portland.

“Whatever challenges college may throw my way, I will have the drive, the purpose, and the love to face them full-heartedly, to find joy in any strife. I’m grateful to all the teachers and faculty at Cheverus for giving me this gift,” he said.
