Gary Hoyt to retire after 43 years of service.

Dear Cheverus Community,

After 43 years of dedicated service to Cheverus Gary Hoyt, Director of Athletics and Activities, has announced his intention to retire at the end of August. Gary will assist with the selection and transition of a new Athletic Director and continue to pursue his passion for working with our coaches and student athletes as a member of our Athletic department.

Gary Hoyt’s contributions to Cheverus High School and our student activities and athletics programs are immeasurable. Under his leadership, our program has grown to include 29 teams, won 102 state championships and 84 SMAA championships in 21 different sports and student activities, such as the math and chess teams, and has sent countless students off to continue their athletic careers in NCAA Division I – III sports. For his contributions to Cheverus athletes and coaches as well as to the high school athletics community of Maine, Gary was named the MIAAA Athletic Director of the Year in 2012.

In addition to being inducted into the Cheverus Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006, Gary has been recognized both locally and nationally with a NFHS Citation in 2009, the Martin E. Ryan CMAA Award of Excellence in 2008, the NIAAA State Award of Merit 2005, the MIAAA Past President’s Special Achievement Award in 2004, and the Jesuit Secondary Education Association’s Outstanding Ministry Award in 1988.

Perhaps most importantly, during his 43 years of service to Cheverus (37 as Director of Athletics and Activities), Gary has represented our school and embodied our values in his interactions with parents, coaches, students, teachers and administrators. Gary bleeds Purple & Gold, and he has guided our programs to a point where they regularly compete with honor and pride against schools two and three times our size.

Cheverus plans to honor Gary Hoyt and his remarkable career during our fall athletic season; details will be forthcoming. The search for a new Athletic Director will begin immediately. A detailed job description and information on how to apply will be shared on our website and will be posted locally and nationally.

For Cheverus,

Fr. Bob Pecoraro, S.J.
