Bishop Deeley celebrated Advent Mass at Cheverus on Friday, December 16, with students, faculty, staff, alumni, family and friends gathered in the Keegan Gym. See the full photo gallery on the Cheverus Facebook page.
As he spoke to the student body during his homily, Bishop Deeley encouraged them to be involved in the world and live out their faith by coming together. The bishop told the students it was the same guidance that Pope Francis gave young people at last summer’s World Youth Day in Poland. Among the nearly two million people in attendance were Bishop Deeley as well as high school and college students from Maine.
“For our young people, they were universal in their appreciation of being with so many of their peers from all over the world,” said Bishop Deeley, who led a diocesan pilgrimage to the event in July. “It was an opportunity to appreciate that the Church includes people from everywhere, and that is a good thing. Flags were waving from Italy and Uganda, as well as Syria and Israel, and, of course, the U.S. It was an experience of Church, one we are part of.”
The bishop recalled that Pope Francis asked the young people to not be “couch potatoes” but rather “active players on the field” through the living out of their faith.
