Cheverus Announces New Four-Year Scholarship to Celebrate the Ignatian Year

December 22, 2021
By Office of Communications

Cheverus is pleased to announce a new scholarship, the Jesuit Spirit of Service Scholarship. First-time freshmen are eligible to apply.

In keeping with Cheverus’s Catholic and Jesuit heritage and informed by our commitment to living as women and men in service to others, this special full four-year scholarship will be awarded to an applicant whose contributions to their community through service and leadership warrant special recognition. All first-time freshmen are eligible for the scholarship. In the spirit of Pedro Arrupe, SJ, this scholarship, which was made possible through the generosity of Cheverus donors, will be awarded to an entering grade nine student who combines strong moral character with a desire to serve those in need in the community.

“In this Ignatian Year, the 500th anniversary of the conversion St. Ignatius who founded the Society of Jesus, this new scholarship specifically recognizes the importance of service rooted in love which is core to our mission, ” said Cheverus President Robert J. Pecoraro, S.J. This school year, Cheverus provided tuition assistance to over 75% of students.

In addition to this new scholarship, Cheverus offers three other scholarships for children of active military personnel, first responders, and diocesan teachers. Ninth grade students starting at Cheverus in the fall of 2021 are eligible for these $5,000 scholarships that are awarded annually.

  • Military Service Scholarship
Our community and our nation are indebted to those who serve selflessly to defend and protect our rights and freedom.  In recognition of hard-working families serving to protect our nation, Cheverus High School has established the Military Service Scholarship to provide financial assistance for incoming ninth grade Cheverus students who are daughters or sons of Active Military Service Personnel with demonstrated financial need.  The Military Service Scholarship provides tuition assistance of $5,000 per year and receipt of this scholarship does not preclude the awarding of additional assistance as determined by the Tuition Assistance Committee.

  • First Responder Scholarship
Our community benefits immeasurably from the skills and expertise provided by those who are trained to render assistance at the scenes of accidents, disasters, and attacks.  In recognition of hard-working families serving on the front-lines of emergency situations, Cheverus High School has established the First Responder Scholarship to provide financial assistance for incoming ninth grade Cheverus students who are daughters or sons of active First Responders (active career police officers or firefighters/EMTs) with demonstrated financial need.  The First Responder Scholarship provides tuition assistance of $5,000 per year and receipt of this scholarship does not preclude the awarding of additional assistance as determined by the Tuition Assistance Committee.

  • Diocesan Teacher Scholarship
Our community benefits greatly from those who devote their careers to educating our youth in the Catholic tradition.  In recognition of hard-working families dedicated to Catholic education, Cheverus High School has established the Diocesan Teacher Scholarship to provide financial assistance for incoming ninth grade Cheverus students who are daughters or sons of full-time teachers in Maine’s Roman Catholic Diocesan elementary and middle schools with demonstrated financial need.  The Diocesan Teacher Scholarship provides tuition assistance of $5,000 per year and receipt of this scholarship does not preclude the awarding of additional assistance as determined by the Tuition Assistance Committee.
