Freshmen Care for our Common Home

October 14, 2021
By Campus Ministry

On a gorgeous fall day, members of the class of 2025 dispersed across the greater Portland area to serve the community as part of the freshman service day.  All service sites were outside at orchards, community gardens, farms, and parks, in commitment to the Jesuit Universal Apostolic Preference to Care for Our Common Home.

Freshmen and their senior leaders did trail maintenance, put gardens to bed, laid mulch, hauled brush, removed invasive species, and picked up litter. In this Ignatian Year, celebrating the 500th anniversary of the conversion of St. Ignatius, focusing on one of the four preferences was a priority to orient the newest members of the community to priorities of the larger Ignatian family.   This service day is part of the two-day freshman retreat Ignite your Spirit.
