Madeline Fowler ’23 is the 2022-2023 recipient of the Elizabeth Gillis and Leonard F. Ahern Memorial Scholarship. The committee assesses candidates on their fulfillment of the “Grad at Grad”: being open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice.

Through a Cheverus selection committee process, the scholarship recipient, a current senior with demonstrated need, is awarded $30,000 toward college.  Leonard Ahern was a lifelong teacher in the Washington, DC metro area. When he died in 2008, this scholarship was established and is named after him and his beloved mother.

In  her  application essay, Fowler wrote about her experience of being open to growth during her time at Cheverus. “Coming to Cheverus I was seeking change,” she said, “Looking back at the person I was as a freshman, I’m very different, but in the best way.”

Fowler is the daughter of Melissa and Ken Fowler and lives in North Yarmouth. She plans to study elementary education in college.
