Fr. Ronald J. Amiot, SJ, Former President of Cheverus, Dies at 73

Fr. Ronald J. Amiot, SJ, former president of Cheverus, died September 3 at the St. Ignatius Loyola Community in Manhattan. He was 73.

Fr. Amiot earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Louis University, master’s degrees in theology/divinity from Boston College’s Weston School of Theology and historical/pastoral theology from St. Louis University’s School of Divinity, and a doctorate in Counselor Education/School Counseling and Human Development from the University of Iowa.

A native of Bridgeport, Conn., Father Amiot entered the Novitiate at Shadowbrook in Lenox, Mass., in 1967, and was ordained on June 4, 1978, at College of the Holy Cross. He pronounced his final vows at College of the Holy Cross on June 14, 1990. As a scholastic, he taught Theology at Cheverus from 1973-1975. Amiot returned to Cheverus in 2005 as president, a position he held until 2007. 

A wake will be held Sept. 11, 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Ave., New York, N.Y., 10028.

His funeral will be held Sept. 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, 980 Park Ave., New York, N.Y., 10028. The Mass will be live-streamed at Fr. Ronald Amiot, SJ, Funeral Mass – YouTube.
