Daniel J. McCartney
Valedictorian
Daniel J. McCartney has been named Valedictorian of the Cheverus Class of 2024. He will deliver an address at graduation on Monday, June 3 at Merrill Auditorium.
While at Cheverus, McCartney was the co-founder and four-year member of the school newspaper The Cheverian and served as co-editor-in-chief. He was a four-year member of the Key Club and a three-year member of Model UN, serving as vice president his senior year. He was a member of the Math Team and the New England Math League for his last three years. McCartney received the District Band bronze rating his freshman year, was selected for District Band honors his sophomore year, District Choir honors his junior and senior years, and All-State Choir his senior year.
McCartney was a four-year member of the cross-country team and served as captain his junior and senior years. He was recognized with an all-conference honorable mention his junior and senior years. McCartney skied for the alpine ski team all four years, and in the same season, ran indoor track his junior and senior years. He ran outdoor track his last three years. He had four four track state championship podiums in the 4×800 relay.
McCartney is a member of the National Honor Society and he received the Underclassman of the Year award his junior year.
Outside of school, McCartney is an active volunteer at his parish, St. Hyacinth’s, and has sung with his church choir during high school.
McCartney is the son of Gaylene and John McCartney ’84 of Westbrook. He plans to attend College of the Holy Cross in the fall and major in biology.
Lauren Grace Kutz
Salutatorian
Lauren Grace Kutz has been named Salutatorian of the Cheverus Class of 2024. She will deliver an address at the Senior Awards Ceremony, immediately following the Baccalaureate Mass on Sunday, June 2 at Cheverus High School.
While at Cheverus, Kutz was a three-year member of the Key Club, serving as treasurer her junior year and vice president her senior year. She was a three-year member of the Environmental Action Club, serving as treasurer her junior year and president her senior year. Kutz was a member of the Math team for three years and attended the Swan’s Island Immersion her junior year.
She was a four-year member of the field hockey team, playing varsity her senior when the team won the Class A state championship. In addition, she was a four-year member of the tennis team, playing varsity her last three years.
Kutz is a member of the National Honor Society and is an AP Scholar. She received the Cheverus Award and the Harvard Book Award her junior year.
Outside of school, Kutz is an active volunteer at St. Brigid School, where she worked with students in the Girls Who Code Club her senior year, and co-founded the STEM club for third and fourth graders her junior year. In addition, she has tap danced at Maine State Ballet since first grade.
Kutz is the daughter of Dr. Katherine Marciniszyn and Dr. Richard Kutz of Portland. She plans to attend Dartmouth College in the fall and study science.
Top 10 Class of 2024
Cheverus will host the 106th commencement on Monday, June 3 at 6:00 p.m. at Merrill Auditorium located at 20 Myrtle St. in Portland. The valedictorian is Daniel McCartney and the salutatorian is Lauren Grace Kutz. A Baccalaureate Mass and Awards Ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 2 at 2:00 p.m. on campus at 267 Ocean Avenue in Portland.
